Undertaking Home Blood Pressure Readings
If you’ve had a one-off blood pressure reading of over 140/90, we recommend monitoring your blood pressure at home for 7 days. This helps us get a clearer picture of your overall blood pressure levels.
You can use a blood pressure machine at home, but we recommend using devices that wrap around the upper arm (not the wrist) for the most accurate results. If you don’t have a machine, you can borrow one from your GP surgery reception.
How to Take Your Readings
Taking your blood pressure correctly is important to ensure accurate results. You can find detailed instructions and a recording sheet on your GP practice’s website. We’ve also included a helpful video and picture guide to walk you through the process.
Once you’ve completed your 7-day readings, you can submit them online via your GP practice’s website.
Why Monitoring Blood Pressure Matters
High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) is one of the most common long-term conditions in our local area. Many people have undiagnosed Hypertension, which can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. The challenge is that high blood pressure often has no symptoms, so regular monitoring is crucial.
Untreated Hypertension can increase the risk of:
Heart attack
Stroke
Kidney damage
Vision loss
Memory problems (dementia)
The good news is that managing your blood pressure can significantly reduce these risks.
Preventing and Managing Hypertension
While medication can help, there are many lifestyle changes you can make to prevent or manage high blood pressure:
Reduce Salt and Carbohydrates
A balanced diet low in salt and refined carbohydrates can help maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
Quit Smoking
Nicotine raises blood pressure. If you need support to quit, visit the NHS Stop Smoking Service.
Limit Caffeine
Caffeine can temporarily increase blood pressure. Try cutting back on coffee, tea, and energy drinks.
Stay Active
Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure. Check out our Health & Wellbeing page for tips on staying active.
Limit Alcohol
Drinking in moderation can help keep your blood pressure in check.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
Losing even a small amount of weight can make a big difference. For support, explore local weight management programs like Total Wellbeing Luton.
Reduce Stress
Chronic stress can contribute to high blood pressure. Try relaxation techniques like mindfulness, yoga, or deep breathing.
How We Diagnose Hypertension
We don’t diagnose Hypertension based on a single reading. Instead, we look at your average blood pressure over 7 days to get a clear picture. If you’ve had a reading over 140/90, it’s important to follow up with home monitoring.
Even if you have a normal reading after a high one, further investigation is needed. A 7-day average helps us determine whether medication or additional tests are necessary.
