Dementia

Understanding Dementia – Support for Patients and Carers

The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms that, over time, can affect memory, problem-solving, language, and behaviour. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia.

Dementia refers to a decline in cognitive function that can eventually impair a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. At Oasis PCN, we’ve created this information page to support both individuals showing signs of dementia and their carers.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a group of symptoms caused by different diseases that damage the brain. These symptoms worsen over time and may include:

  • Memory loss

  • Confusion and needing help with daily tasks

  • Problems with language and understanding

  • Changes in behaviour

Dementia is progressive, meaning symptoms may start mild but gradually become more severe. While there are many types of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, followed by vascular dementia.
